Are Coconuts Fruit, Vegetables Or Nuts? Meet "The Tree Which Gives All That's Necessary For Living"
Coconut (Cocos nucifera) belongs to the Palm family (Arecaceae).
Spanish explorers rather whimsically named them cocos - meaning 'grinning face', this is supposedly because of the three little eyes on the base which look like a happy monkey.
Classed as a fruit though it is frequently confused for being a nut, the coconut is actually a one-seeded drupe. The same family of fruits as plums, peaches and cherries.
Although it is definitely not recommended, in an emergency situation coconut water can be used as an alternative IV. There is one case in recent medical literature that describes a man in a remote part of the Solomon Islands being given roughly 2 and a half liters of coconut water intravenously. The hospital that saved the man had kept him on an IV drip for 36 days but unfortunately ran out of fluids. Due to it's remoteness they then had to use coconut water for the next 2 days.
In Sanskrit, the coconut palm is known as kalpav RkSa - 'tree which gives all that is necessary for living' because nearly all of it's parts can be used: the water, milk, flesh, sugar and oil - even the husks and leaves are used for furnishings, gardening, farming and decoration.
Palm trees produce coconuts up to 13 times a year and although it takes a year for the coconuts to mature, a fully blossomed tree can produce between 60-180 coconuts in a single harvest.
It's pretty difficult to climb a coconut tree and even harder to pick a coconut at the same time so tn Thailand, Malaysia and some other subtropical countries, trained pig-tailed macaques are used to harvest coconuts. In fact, there are still training schools for these monkeys in parts of the countries and each year competitions are held to find the fastest harvester.
