7 Oil Pulling Facts You (Probably!) Don't Know

If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then the mouth is the doorway to the body.

We know that in a typical mouth there are 8 billion bacteria and 700 different species of microbes.[1] That’s more bacteria in your mouth right now than there are people on the planet.

And just like some people, some bacteria are the bad guys.

Toxins in the mouth and plaque on the teeth directly contribute to ill health throughout the body - as well as bad breath, bleeding gums, mouth ulcers, cavities and tooth pain.

Sometimes it’s really serious.

Here are 7 Oil Pulling Facts you probably don't know:

    1. Oil pulling helps whiten teeth: swishing with Mintycoco's premium formula loosens plaque which helps whiten teeth.
    2. Gives fresher breath: oil pulling has a "seek and engage" mechanism to capture the Bad Guys - the bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites - in your mouth, trapping them in the oil solution. This removes the cause of bad breath from source.
    3. Removes bacteria: there are 8 billion microorganisms in your mouth right now. That's more than there are people on the planet. Trap them in Mintycoco's premium formula then spit them out. This prevents them from being absorbed sub lingually and also from directly entering your bloodstream via any little wounds to your gums - for instance if you ever see blood after brushing or flossing.
    4. Kissability rating through the roof: run your tongue over your teeth and gums after oilpulling with Mintycoco and you'll feel nothing but fresh cleanliness. Ulcers and cankers are soothed. Bad Bugs are trapped within the premium oils blend and ejected when you spit out the Mintycoco after oilpulling.
    5. 62% MCTs. You've probably heard about the huge benefits of using coconut oil. MCTs are known to get the body into Ketosis - a natural fat-burning state - and to provide significant health benefits. So when you're oilpulling, it makes sense to use the highest naturally occurring MCTs.
    6. That's one of the reasons why we've developed the Vitalock System™ - the best in the world for making sure your coconut oil contains all the nutrients from when the coconuts are hand-picked in the morning.
    7. Numerous clinical trials and scientific research reports: clinical studies ending with positive results similar to this study published in the Journal of Oral Health and Community Dentistry to demonstrate the effectiveness of oil pulling compared to other forms of oral hygiene. (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) (9) The subjects in the study had mild to moderate gum disease and plaque accumulation, typical of the population as a whole. They were instructed to continue their normal oral hygiene practices and introduce oil pulling into their routine. At the end of the 45 days, plaque formation was significantly reduced, with most of the reduction coming during the later half of the study, indicating that the longer you oil pull, the better the results. Gingivitis (i.e., gum disease) was also significantly reduced in all subjects, decreasing by more than 50 percent. The researchers rated the changes as “highly” significant.

When you brush your teeth or floss, and have any bleeding in your mouth, that means the bacteria and fungi in your mouth have direct access to your bloodstream. This fast-tracks inflammatory responses, often with serious consequences.

If you are suffering from poor health and inflammation – as the majority of the population is – the cause could well be in your mouth.

Old style mouthwashes, toothbrushing and flossing are not enough. They are losing the war for oral health.

Additional solutions are essential.

Coconut oil pulling is being increasingly adopted by dental and medical professionals.

Many public figures including athletes and celebrities from Gwyneth Paltrow to Vogue editors have for a long time been raving about how effective it is.  Considering as many as 70% of us have gum disease and tooth decay releasing toxic bacteria and fungi into our mouths, the clinical evidence for oil pulling's effectiveness is compelling.

When you’re looking for a 100% pure mouth-cleaning solution that targets bad breath, stained and yellow teeth, how better than to harness all the pure and natural goodness of virgin cold-pressed coconut oil and peppermint essence.

Let’s be honest, what you put in your mouth should be simply clean and natural. No parabens, PEGs or phthalates. No sulphates or silicones. No mineral oil, no glycols, no DEA or TEA. Ever.

We are seeing increasing problems with dental health due to the prevalence of sugar in the modern diet. Australia's Department of Health describes tooth decay and gum disease as the single biggest public health issue.

Oil pulling envelopes bacteria within the coconut oil and peppermint formula, which can then be spat out. When you brush your teeth or floss, and have any bleeding in your mouth, that means the bacteria and fungi in your mouth have direct access to your bloodstream. This fast-tracks inflammatory responses, often with serious consequences.

Two recent instances of mouth bacteria causing severe internal infections are reported in the British Medical Journal [2] and also in IFLS [3]

The first instance is probably one of the most well known cases of infection from Streptococcus gordonii bacteria and concerns a woman with a prosthetic knee.

A 65-year-old woman with osteoarthritis, who underwent knee replacement 5 years prior, developed sudden onset knee pain and swelling. She had voluntarily started a vigorous dental floss routine prior to the onset of symptoms.

How could Streptococcus gordonii, a bacterium usually found in the mouth, suddenly cause severe infection in the woman's prosthetic knee after five years with no problems?

After she arrived at the emergency room with pain and swelling around her knee replacement, Doctors eventually identified that her tooth flossing was the culprit due to high levels of bacteria in her mouth.

Her doctors said in their report that it is likely that her vigorous flossing and bleeding gums introduced the bacteria into her bloodstream through tiny cuts in the gums. The bacteria then made their way through the blood stream and settled onto her knee replacement. You can see their report in the BMJ Case Reports.

It was easy for the bacteria to attack the prosthesis, as opposed to elsewhere in the body, because the prosthetic joint had no defence like the rest of the body’s immune system. With an inability to fend off potentially problematic microbes, organisms easily grow on artificial joints.

To treat the infection, the doctors opened up the woman's knee and washed out as much of the bacteria as they could then prescribed a long-term course of antibiotics. Fortunately, the woman was able to keep her original knee replacement.

This is just one case and the majority of people floss without issue. There is no reason to stop flossing and it is increasingly recommended to oil pull, to maintain manageable levels of bacteria in your mouth.

There have been other cases of a knee joint replacement being infected with S. gordonii. A 78-year-old woman had a relatively similar case in Belgium. She too had swelling around her prosthetic knee from S. gordonii bacteria but she also had swelling in her aorta, an artery in the heart. This patient had her knee prosthesis replaced as well as a valve replacement in her heart. You can read the report in BMC Infectious Diseases.

In another instance, Doug Kaye from San Francisco spent most of October 2011 in hospital due to a liver abscess and subsequent complications - all due to mouth infections.

Doug reports that he was using a WaterPik daily with quite a bit of bleeding from my gums. After five months he became quite ill with an 8cm abscess on his liver. The bacterium was identified as Streptococcus milleri, also typically found in the mouth. Doug's infection spread to the right lung. Thoracic surgery was required to address a pleural effusion.

What was the cause of Doug's Streptococcus milleri liver infection in the first place?

Once again, this is a bacterium that we all have in our mouths, stomachs and intestines, but it’s toxic in the bloodstream. Doug's team of infectious-disease doctors were extremely inquisitive about his travel, activities, diet and dental history. One doctor in particular kept asking Doug about recent dental work. Back in the spring, his hygienist convinced him to start using a Waterpik in addition to flossing, and he did so every day. But there was one area of his gums that always bled. Every night they bled. And every night that opened a pathway for more Streptococcus milleri to enter Doug's bloodstream.

Doug and his doctors are satisfied that the constant traumatizing of his gums was the ultimate cause of the live abscess.

You can see a detailed account of Doug's mouth infection resulting in thoracic surgery here [4]

Dental hygienist Gail Pierce reports, "Being a Dental Hygienist for 54 years, I have often heard of things like this happening." [4]

Dr. F Karach, a Ukrainian oncologist, helped introduce oil pulling to the mainstream population by announcing to his colleagues at a 1992 conference for oncologists and bacteriologists that he had positively affected his leukemia and arthritis by practicing oil pulling on a daily basis.

Dr Karach conducted many clinical trials, which have been repeated subsequently. There is overwhelming evidence for the benefits of oil pulling.

What people are saying about us...

"I certainly have noticed a change in my teeth, as an owner of teeth that are some natural and some veneer, my natural teeth always seem to discolour from the unattainable porcelain. This making them stand out and not look as natural. But since using this, my teeth are now back in sync with my veneer without the use or strong abrasive toothpastes."
Stewart, Amazon Customer

"I love this product, it has improved the whiteness of my teeth and really makes my mouth feel healthier. I could see a difference in a matter of days and would definitely recommend it to any one."
Talitha, Mintycoco Customer

"I bought this for my daughter to try as she suffers from teeth which overlap in places making it very difficult to clean them fully in between. She has used this product for just over a week now and the difference to the look of her teeth and her breath is fantastic."
