People who adopt oil pulling typically do so for 5-20 minutes per day. This is unprecedented in voluntary oral health terms. Oil pulling first thing in the morning encourages mindfulness in addition to positive oral health benefits. And oil pulling makes teeth whiter - so there's usually a visible "reward" which always helps.

Increasing numbers of patients are asking about oil pulling. Now you can harness the renewed public commitment to their oral health while contributing to your practice profitability.

When oil pulling first began to hit the mainstream, dental professionals were sceptical of their patients spending the required time to oil pull.

After all, expecting someone to spend between five and 20 (!) minutes oil pulling seems impossible, when you see the daily evidence of how little time most people spend brushing and flossing.

Yet increasing numbers of dental and medical professionals are seeing the benefits of oil pulling, when especially when used alongside conventional good oral hygiene.

"This oral therapy is a type of Ayurvedic medicine [a traditional Indian system] that dates back 3,000 years," says Jessica T. Emery, DMD, owner of Sugar Fix Dental Loft in Chicago USA.

Oil pulling is not a practice that's based on pseudo-science: studies show that oil pulling helps against gingivitis, plaque, and microorganisms that cause bad breath.

"Most microorganisms inhabiting the mouth consist of a single cell," Emery says. "Cells are covered with a lipid, or fatty, membrane, which is the cell's skin. When these cells come into contact with oil, a fat, they naturally adhere to each other."

Another recent study found that coconut oil may help prevent tooth decay.

When you're advising your patients or clients, it's a good idea to say that twenty minutes of swishing is a long time, and while the longer you pull, the more bacteria you'll remove, 5 or 10 minutes will still offer some benefit. Also, if your jaw starts aching a few minutes in, slow down.

"Don't work too hard," Emery says. "A gentle swishing, pushing, and sucking the oil through the teeth is all that's required."

Don't swallow. "If you find it hard not to, you likely have too much oil in your mouth," Emery says. "Spit it out and try again with a smaller amount." Also, don't spit it down the sink, as the oil could clog your pipes. (It's best to discard the used oil into the nearest rubbish bin or toilet.)

Of course, we don't want anyone to skip brushing and flossing. "Oil pulling should never replace routine dental visits and traditional home oral care," Emery says. "It's a great supplemental therapy."

We know that in a typical mouth there are 8 billion bacteria and 700 different species of microbes. Click here for more information on why coconut oil pulling solutions are needed.

Oil pulling when used alongside modern oral care routines is proven to whiten teeth.

Here's a proven - and profitable - way to deal with the  increasing problems of dental health due to the prevalence of sugar in the modern diet. Australia's Department of Health describes tooth decay and gum disease as the single biggest public health issue.

Additional solutions are needed.

Oil pulling envelopes bacteria within the coconut oil and peppermint formula, which can then be spat out. Dentists and Hygienists who struggle to get clients to pay due attention to oral health are surprised when oil pulling is adopted.

In addition, oil pulling is a gentle, non-aggressive way to remove debris from the mouth without causing gums to bleed; this method avoids opening entrances to the bloodstream and the rest of the body to those damaging bacteria.

There are several reasons that oil pulling is likely to be highly effective in killing the bacteria in the gum pockets.

  1. Most natural oils have antibacterial properties. Studies have been done that demonstrate their ability to kill bacteria. In addition, some oils also have anti-inflammatory properties.5
  2. Oil pulling sessions for up to 20 minutes allow time for the oil to "seep" into the pockets. Unlike brushing, which only lasts for seconds or at best minutes, or using a mouthwash, which lasts a few seconds, the extended time of the procedure keeps the antibacterial agent in the mouth long enough to work its way down into the protected pockets and reach the harmful bacteria where they live.
  3. Oil is, to put it simply, oily. It does what oil does. Unlike toothpaste which only goes where it's brushed, oil seeps into the nooks and crannies of your gums.
  4. The aggressive swishing and pushing of the oil back and forth across the gums aids in pressing the oil down into the pockets. Again, doing this for up to 20 minutes allows the oil to penetrate deep into the pockets.

Bleaches such as the hydrogen peroxide used on whiting strips and medical whitening bleaches can damage gums and lead to increased tooth sensitivity.

Chemical whitening methods can also damage enamel and often don't help prevent decay or plaque so the mouth isn't just sensitive but is still filled with negative bacteria.

Oil pulling is completely different and because it's all natural there are no harsh chemicals to bleach teeth. The mechanical effect of drawing the oil through the teeth gives a deep clean, removing particles of food which would otherwise slowly decay and fuel plaque and bacterial growth in the mouth.

Alongside regular brushing and oral care, oil pulling leaves with a healthy shine and stronger less sensitive teeth.

Peppermint essential oil is excellent for oral health. It's no coincidence that it's been used for decades for toothpaste and mouthwash.

Research shows that peppermint oil is able to eradicate anaerobic bacteria, such as those that live below the gum line and cause gum disease. Typically these bacteria are able to thrive in environments that are low in oxygen so if you have any sign of gum disease, including organic peppermint essential oil with an oil pulling regimen could do wonders for gums. [5] [6]

When using oils with organic all natural ingredients there are no real side effects associated with oil pulling. However negative effects can happen if you use oil pulling to replace regular oral care routines.

Oil pulling is not a replacement for regular and thorough brushing and is meant to accompany other routines such as flossing. Oil pulling should accompany current routines to give a whiter smile and strong, healthy gums that are less prone to bleeding or ulcers.

It is important to choose your oil pulling products carefully. Many cheap companies mix their oil with harmful substances. In fact Harvard Medical School conducted a study on Ayurvedic Herbal Medicines that were available through Boston South Asian grocery stores and found that one in five contained potentially harmful levels of lead, mercury and/or Arsenic [7].

It is vital to purchase top quality, organic non GMO oil with only natural added ingredients, such as Mintycoco.

It is well documented that coconut oil kills fungus. It is a natural fungicide. Coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids that destroy the cell membrane of fungi. Without cell membranes the fungi perish.

A fungus which lives in the mouth is Candida albicans. Some people encounter Candida albicans as the common cause of oral thrush, nappy rush or vaginal yeast infections.

75% of women will experience at least one episode of yeast infection.

Human colonisation: oral thrush.

Changes to the immune defences can help Candida albicans cause life-threatening infections of the blood stream and the inner organs. Candida albicans is the most commonly acquired fungal infections in a hospital setting, particularly among patients in intensive care units.

The consequences are dire. Each year, around 700 patients die of Candida albicans infections in the UK alone. This is about as many as those that die of infections caused by Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA. Rates of Candida albicans infections remained steady over a five-year period. In addition to the human suffering, each Candida albicans infection prolongs the time the patient needs to spend in the intensive care unit by more than five days.

Candida albicans infections, like many other fungal diseases, are a global problem. Around the world, 400,000 people suffer each year from infections of the blood stream and the organs – and this number is rising. With the advent of new medical procedures that has led to an increase in people with compromised immune systems, the incidence rate of Candida albicans infections is on the rise as well.

A review of 750m hospitalisations in the US revealed that the rate of fungal bloodstream infections has increased by more than 200% within a couple of decades. With mortality rates of up to 75%, the human burden is substantial, demanding effective therapeutic strategies.

Preventing transmission of Candida albicans is next to impossible because the “enemy lives within.”

While the spread of viral or bacterial infections can often successfully be averted by quite simple measures, such as washing the hands or using condoms, these are not an option for a fungus that colonises humans during birth or shortly after – passing through the birth canal, or possibly through nursing, or through the close mother-child relationship in general (for example by licking pacifiers) provide ample opportunities for the fungus to colonise our mouths as babies and for it to eventually enter our digestive tract.

The transition between living in and on humans without causing trouble to suddenly causing a life-threatening disease is a puzzle. Scientists are only just now beginning to unravel how Candida albicans flips the switch that turns it into a deadly threat, requiring immediate medical intervention and the application of antifungal drugs.

Recent research showed that Candida albicans co-opts a molecular signal that usually regulates mating in the fungus. This signal down-regulates any fungal features associated with causing disease. This way, scientists assume Candida albicans can be present in the intestines without alerting the immune system to its presence. Curiously, this molecular switch is also controlled by the nutrient composition in the human gut. The exact nature of this, however, remains enigmatic.

Which leads to the second major problem associated with Candida albicans infections. They are difficult to treat because only a few drugs exist which are able to kill fungi.

The reason for why there are many fewer anti-fungal than antibacterial drugs lies in our shared evolutionary history. Fungi are more closely related to humans than bacteria, which means that there are less specific molecules in the fungus that can be targeted to stop the fungus from growing. This, in combination with the challenges of drug design in general, dramatically slows down the development of anti-fungal drugs. So much so that it has been almost ten years since the last anti-fungal drug class received approval.

Candida albicans is not the only fungus that threatens human health and life. The top ten most aggressive fungi kill as many, if not more, people as tuberculosis or malaria. Worldwide, an estimated 1.5m patients die from fungal infections each year. (Thanks to "The Conversation" originally reporting on this problem.) [8]

Given that coconut oil kills fungus, it's a natural for oil pulling and improved health. [9] [10]

What people are saying about us...

"I certainly have noticed a change in my teeth, as an owner of teeth that are some natural and some veneer, my natural teeth always seem to discolour from the unattainable porcelain. This making them stand out and not look as natural. But since using this, my teeth are now back in sync with my veneer without the use or strong abrasive toothpastes."
Stewart, Amazon Customer

"I love this product, it has improved the whiteness of my teeth and really makes my mouth feel healthier. I could see a difference in a matter of days and would definitely recommend it to any one."
Talitha, Mintycoco Customer

"I bought this for my daughter to try as she suffers from teeth which overlap in places making it very difficult to clean them fully in between. She has used this product for just over a week now and the difference to the look of her teeth and her breath is fantastic."
