Learn about the Mintycoco oral health range. Fun to use, natural and the world’s only oil pulling mouthwash sourced from raw, alkaline, organically farmed coconut oil and natural herbal essences – here’s the story behind this innovative oral hygiene brand.
When Angela’s own teeth began to discolour, Angela began to question how this could be happening.
“I’d had an idyllic childhood but for one thing - I hated my teeth. You see, my two front teeth stuck out! Like Bugs Bunny. I developed a strange smile, with my top lip drawn down over my top teeth to hide those buck teeth. I'd put my hand in front of my mouth when speaking. Or just literally "keep my mouth shut.
“So I know what it's like to hate your smile. To be ashamed of your teeth. It's awful, crippling.
“Until one day, just before Christmas when I was 17, I knocked them clean out in a riding accident! My horse failed to jump a gate - she crashed to the ground bringing the gate down too - and I hit the concrete-hard yard teeth-first. The paramedics who rushed to the scene to take me to hospital in an ambulance offered to take those teeth - knocked clean out, roots and all - with me in a glass of milk to "put them back in" but I said, "No! I've always hated those teeth - I don't want them back!"
“Anyway, I ended up with two beautiful, porcelain front teeth which are STRAIGHT! At last! I was so happy! The dentist carefully matched them to the colour of my own teeth. Finally, I could smile again, properly.
“Then, as I became older, I was horrified to discover that my smile, which would get me so many compliments, was fading, tarnishing ... it become (I'm embarrassed to admit) YELLOW!
“I tried everything - expensive dentistry, teeth whitening, disgusting artificial and abrasive toothpastes and treatments, so called natural remedies... nothing worked. At the same time I suffered from mouth ulcers and inflammation in my body... I felt dreadful.
“Eventually, I stumbled upon an ancient Ayurvedic tradition called Oil Pulling. I did a lot of research (real research) ... and tried it myself. The trouble was, the techniques weren't clear and the "oil" options all tasted TERRIBLE. But I persevered. I knew there had to be a better way.”
Angela is cofounder of the deliciously natural Mintycoco oil pulling brand, wildly popular because of the organic, alkaline, detoxing formula.
Angela and partner Robbie had discovered a hole in the market when it came to safe, natural oral hygiene products. Currently, most oral health products contain additives and chemicals.
And they’re not working – according to dentists and government research, oral health is at crisis point.
Frustrated by the lack of options available, Angela decided that, with husband David’s biology background and working with US biochemist Jonathan Becthtel, they would create a product that not only met their standards in terms of safety, but would also taste delicious and be easy to use.
From there, Mintycoco was born.
Ensuring nothing but the best when it comes to your dental hygiene, Mintycoco is made from natural ingredients which are completely safe to swallow.
Here, Angela explains a little bit more about Mintycoco’s range of natural oral health products.
- Tell us a bit about Mintycoco, what exactly is it all about?
Mintycoco is delicious, natural, and non-toxic oral care. It’s sold online and stocked in in health stores, dental surgeries, independent retailers and pharmacies around the world.
All Mintycoco products are made using organic and natural ingredients – perfect for the conscious consumer.
Being the Mum of five children and three grandchildren, my husband and I have always explored and supported alternative health therapies when it comes to our personal health. We developed a deep interest in natural and organic products decades ago, when we discovered natural cures for my Father’s gout, a family tendency to depression and bi-polarity along with the myriad ailments which children come into contact with.
My husband David has a background in biology and we work with an outstanding biochemist in the USA. We always look for clinical evidence and scientific trials so that we have a well-rounded understanding of how best to combine leading edge medicine with natural, organic, holistic therapies.
In my opinion, it’s essential to have an effective and safe product which is cruelty-free.
We knew that if we could create an oilpulling formula which is entirely natural, effective, with zero sugar or sweeteners and which which is super convenient to use whether you’re at home or travelling, we’d be onto a winner!

- What inspired you to start Mintycoco?
Well, firstly it was my own experience.
Then when I discovered the extensive clinical trials and research, I knew we had to create this solution.
So many people suffer terribly from poor health. And “All disease starts in the mouth” according to many eminent Doctors, including Dr Bruce Fife.
Even worse, the health impacts of tooth decay and gum disease impact the entire body, with proven links to heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes and ongoing inflammatory processes in the body.
It’s just so hard for people because sugar and processed foods are everywhere.
Old school mouthwashes, toothbrushing and flossing are not solving the problem.
According to the Dental Association, it can be dangerous to use conventional chemical mouthwash because of health hazards.
But something is needed. In the typical mouth there are 8 billion bad bacteria, viruses, fungi. When gum disease and tooth decay are particularly bad, these bad bugs also attract parasites living in the mouth.
According to esteemed medical researcher and author Dr Bruce Fife, “All Disease Starts In The Mouth".
David C Kennedy DDS, who’s highly respected around the world on the topic of oral health, reports that , "At the age of 15, gum disease has already begun in 60% of children".
Like many people, we constantly question what we come into contact with on a daily basis.
Everyday mouthwashes contain potentially harmful chemicals - there are significant links to oral cancer and there have been more than 4 million recalls of mainstream mouthwashes.
We know that it’s really important for all of us to use natural non-toxic oral health products – because it’s too easy to swallow mouthwash and toothpaste instead of spitting it out.
Our inspiration comes from wanting the best for our own family and our extended world-wide family, creating a safer and healthier environment both in the home and on the planet.
- What separates you from the generic supermarket brands? Why should we be using Mintycoco?
The soft tissue of our gums readily absorbs any nutrients or chemicals that a product may contain. Mainstream mouthwashes found in the supermarkets, pharmacies and online contain a complex blend of chemicals which you would not knowingly allow near your body – let alone put in your mouth!
Mintycoco stands out from all other mouthwash and oilpulling brands because it is the safest on the market to swallow.
The formula contains beautiful plant-based ingredients, such as organic peppermint, which is naturally anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-viral. And in the formula we’ve made with our unique Vitalock raw alkaline extra virgin organic coconut oil, it tastes like a minty treat!
- What exciting things have you got planned for this year?
We’ve set up a GiveBack arrangement with a super children’s charity near where our coconuts are organically farmed and hand picked.
The Rainbow Centre enables children to escape extreme poverty. We’ve already made 1,080 Giving Impacts and we can’t wait to help further. We’re hoping to visit Sri Lanka this year to have time both with the farmers and these children.
Oral health in general and mouthwashes in particular are ripe for disruption.
Dominated by Listerine, with $60bn annual turnover and $13bn annual profits, we know that parents are no longer content to use toxic chemicals linked to industrial cleaning agents, oral cancer and more than 4m recalls.
Oil pulling has been trending online since 2005, based on 3,000 Ayurvedic practices, backed with numerous clinical trials and scientific research papers. Oil pulling is endorsed by Dental and Medical health professionals, celebrities, politicians, athletes, Vogue editors and health conscious consumers.
We’re super excited about making a difference to oral health globally.
- Quite often, it can be a challenge to look after our teeth. What are some of your top tips to help with this?
We know that everyone’s busy – and we also know about the proven benefits of mindfulness and good habits.
Establishing the habit of oilpulling with Mintycoco in the morning not only protects your oral health – it helps detox your entire body and stills the mind.
Mintycoco is super easy to use, you just sip, swish and afterwards spit out the Mintycoco.
- How do you manage to balance both work and family?
Ah, that’s been a work in progress for nearly 30 years!
When I had my first children, I created a real live theme park from scratch, to recreate my country childhood for my sons and everyone else too – because I realized that I’d had a very lucky, happy childhood. So all of our children grew up on a theme park and a farm.
It was magical.
We emigrated to Australia to have some family adventure time, because we wanted to have more time with our children before they were all grown up and flown from the nest!
Crealy Great Adventure Parks is still in our family, now operated by my brother Chris and his family.
So it’s a question of priorities I guess. You can only do what you can do. Work life balance can be challenging at times – it’s just important to remember that you can do everything, not just all at the same time!
Most of all, we love to create solutions, just have time together and travel. Family times are the best times!
- What are your hopes for the future, both personal and for Mintycoco?
That’s easy: there are four priorities for us.
One is to spend time with family and friends. A second is to work with awesome people and run business in a Humanity Plus way – that’s positive for people, the planet, and putting profits to good use.
The third is linked to that: when Mintycoco help our customers and their children, every sale supports children escaping extreme poverty. We believe this is a small world and it’s important to share prosperity so that peace flourishes.
The fourth priority – and these are all pretty equal, so in no particular order, is of course helping people enjoy the very best through the world’s most delicious and effective oil pulling mouthwash.
Child and adult dental health is declining:
UK - “Oral Health Of UK Kids Getting Worse: NHS Chief.” The Health and Social Care Information Center survey says that the oral health of kids in the UK is getting worse.
This trend saw 10 percent rise of hospital admissions among children due to severe tooth decay.
The report says boys were more likely to experience severe tooth decay than girls. Royal College of Surgeons' Dean of Dental Surgery Nigel Hunt describes the rise of tooth decay as unacceptable.
"It is absolutely intolerable that in this day and age, in a civilised country, children are having so many teeth out for decay, which is over 90% preventable.
"We need to stop talking and have action to bring several bodies together - the Royal College of Surgeons, Public Health England, NHS England, government and industry to make sure we improve all aspects of oral health."
"Not only is tooth decay distressing to children and parents, it has serious social and financial implications," he says.
The leading reason for hospital admissions among children aged 5 to 9 is tooth extraction. 90% of tooth decay is considered preventable.
Child tooth removal 'at crisis point', doctors warn
Doctors are calling for urgent action to reduce the number of children needing to have rotten teeth removed under general anaesthetic in hospital.
Nearly 26,000 children, aged five to nine, were admitted to hospital in England in one year, up 14% from the previous year, with tooth decay. The Royal College of Surgeons says many hospitals are reaching "crisis point" managing the number of children.
A report by the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) published in 2015 showed tooth decay was the most common reason five to nine-year-olds were admitted to hospital.
Approximately 46,500 children and young people under 19 were admitted to hospital with tooth decay in 2013-14, with 25,812 in the five to nine age group, a 14% increase since 2010-11.
The report says there may be several reasons for this rise, including children not accessing a dentist until it is too late or more children not brushing their teeth properly.
The RCS says £30m was spent on hospital-based tooth extractions for children aged 18 years and under in 2012-13.
"Many hospitals are reaching crisis point in managing the number of children referred for a general anaesthetic for tooth decay," said Prof Hunt.

Australia: Toddlers as young as 18 months are having rotting teeth pulled out and in some cases older children are having all 20 of their baby teeth removed in major operations, dentists say.
Children are presenting with blackened teeth and pus-filled gums
A three-year-old had 11 teeth extracted, and (right) a two-year-old was often given soft drink, which had dissolved the teeth down to the gum, exposing the nerve.
"It is very sad because you can imagine the impact on that child when they have to go to school with no teeth and try to function without them. It is quite upsetting," she said.
"It is not uncommon to be taking out 12 or 14 baby teeth in one go. We would do that quite frequently."
More than 1000 children underwent general anaesthetic at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne in 2015, mostly to get multiple decayed teeth removed. Of these, 178 were three or under.
Dr Beaumont said the extractions often had lifelong consequences only fixed with expensive orthodontic treatment.
The Australian Dental Association says as many as 10% of children who have rotten teeth taken out were returning a later date to have more removed. A total of 164,785 children received dental care from the Dental Health Services Victoria in the past financial year, many of them for tooth decay.
The ADA’s Professor Manton said the Australian average for four-year-olds was to have one tooth with decay, with most of those remaining untreated. A recent survey of more than 600 children found that just over one-third of the children had evidence of decay.
Between 1994 and 2013 in Australia, the proportion of people uncomfortable about their dental appearance increased from 20% to nearly 27%. The proportion with toothache increased from 11% to 16% over the same period.
90% of adults in the US have significant tooth decay or gum disease
According to the American Dental Association, tooth loss appears related to the onset of disability and mortality, raising important clinical issues for prevention and geriatric care. The fewer natural teeth you have at the age of 70, indicates aging at an accelerated rate. Elders fewer teeth at age 70 were significantly more likely to report mobility problems such as difficulty walking or climbing stairs and with greater mortality, said a Reuters Health report.
"It is important to take poor dental health seriously in that these people may be at greater risk of general physical and/or cognitive decline," Dr. Poul Holm-Pedersen of the Copenhagen Gerontological Oral Health Research Center told Reuters Health.
USA: According to research from The Pew Charitable Trusts, high rates of dental disease and lack of access to care affect significant numbers, project director Margaret Langelier told the House Health and Welfare Committee.
"We still have a long way to go," said the Center for Health Workforce Studies at the University of Albany School of Public Health in New York.
Dental and oral health problems, such as cancer or other diseases of the mouth and gums, remain a significant problem in poor rural areas such as Kentucky.
Kentucky still has a high rate of adults over 65 who have had all their natural teeth extracted. About 25 percent of such adults have no teeth, making Kentucky the fifth worst in the nation.
